When deploying iPad devices at any scale, knowing the end user of the device is an important
attribute for scoping content and settings. This has typically been accomplished either by
manually assigning after enrollment, or through an authenticated enrollment workflow where
the end user is prompted for their username and password. Both methods have their
drawbacks; stale data and manual manipulation with the former, and complicated usernames
and passwords with the later. Further, the authenticated enrollment flow is great for ensuring
security and ease of device assignment, however, it is often difficult for younger users, causing
more room for error and lost instructional time.
This new workflow improves the overall deployment experience so that a device simply needs
to be enrolled into Jamf School or Jamf Pro and dropped off at a classroom or other location.
The classroom teacher is then empowered to quickly pull up their live class roster to
seamlessly generate a QR code which the student can scan to instantly assign themselves as
the device owner. This simple workflow can easily be built upon to leverage the power of Smart
Groups to scope content and settings that are specific to that end user, minimizing IT’s time
commitment and ensuring instructional time is preserved.
